Letter from the Director
You are here: Home About Pinewood Director's Welcome

Welcome to Pinewood!

Welcome to our website and thank you for visiting the virtual Pinewood community!

Pinewood American International School is an independent, college-preparatory school offering an American curriculum for students in PreK through Grade 12 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program to students in Grades 11 and 12. All instruction is delivered in English while our unique community fosters a distinctly international environment.

Accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges in the United States with IBO World School membership, Pinewood is the only school in northern Greece that offers both the American high school diploma and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, thus preparing students for competitive university acceptances in the USA, UK and other English-speaking universities around the world.

At Pinewood, we believe that good habits of mind and a well-rounded sophistication are the building blocks of personal excellence. Our dedicated faculty, whether teaching social and emotional development to 4-year olds or physics to IB students, challenge each student to develop those intellectual virtues inherent in a liberal arts curriculum. We are proud of our student-centered approach to education, small classes and emphasis on extra-curricular involvement as avenues for creating unique learning environments that foster students’ individual development.

Beyond the classroom, Pinewood teaches its students to be responsible and caring citizens of our world. One place this happens is during our Elementary Assemblies and Secondary Seminar periods. These programs encourage our students to creatively use knowledge, exposes them to multiple perspectives, asks them to reflect on new ideas and provides them with opportunities for public performance. Because our students not only watch and listen during Assembly and Seminar, but also plan and participate in many of them, they are a true reflection of our wonderfully talented student body.

Other unique ways in which learning takes place outside the classroom is through our Host Country Studies trips and After School Activities Program. This year, our Elementary students will travel around Thessaloniki on day trips while Grades 6-12 will experience overnight trips to Lake Kerkini (Grades 6-8), Pertouli (Grades 9-10) and Peloponnese (Grades 11-12). Simultaneously, each of the activities in our Activities program is meant to build curiosity, sportsmanship, character and leadership in our students.

As educators, we know that learning is never “done.” It is a continuously evolving process as ideas develop and demands change. So, as we enter the new school year, we are excited by the work aimed at improved student learning and remind you that our partnership with families plays a central role in the success of our students.

As you browse our website, I trust that you will find evidence of the exciting ways that our students are engaging with the world of learning at Pinewood and encourage you to visit us often.
