    EYP/Elementary Principal's Monthly Letter

    Dear Parents,

I have now been in Greece for 7 weeks. While I miss my son terribly, I am very happy to be here in Thessaloniki and to have landed at Pinewood. My son is at university in the states and is doing well. I am continuing my pursuit of the Greek language and one day soon, I will take on Greek driving.

On Friday, our elementary students went on their first field trip of the year to the Avant Garde Sports Club. Lots of fun was had by all and we were very grateful for the mild weather. They played football, beach tennis and beach volleyball. They went through an obstacle course and participated in team-building activities. It was great to see your kids playing and laughing together.

This past month, our students celebrated World Peace Day. It was a day of spreading kindness and peace throughout the school. Elementary students practiced kindness by saying something nice to people they met that day. Additionally, students and staff alike were encouraged to write a wish for peace and place it on our Day of Peace board in the reception area.

Many of you have been with the Pinewood family for years while there are others who are like me and are new to Pinewood. Either way, we are all very lucky to have the teachers that we do working with our children. If you would like to say “thank you” to your child’s teacher for World Teacher Day (5 October), please join the PTFA in organizing a luncheon for our teachers by donating at the reception desk or bringing in something for the luncheon. See more here

I am very happy about how smoothly the first month of school has been so far. The kids seem settled in to their classrooms and routines. There is a very positive attitude in the hallways, even with all of the new changes we are implementing. Thank you, parents, for helping get this new year off to a great start!

As you know, one of the changes that is happening here at Pinewood is the new BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) approach to IT in the classroom. I’d like to congratulate Kayla Maloney and her fourth graders. They are fully embracing BYOD and are accomplishing research and many other projects in class because of this.

MAP testing for grades 2-5 will begin the week of 15 October. Testing will take place throughout the week during class time. Children are tested in both language arts and mathematics. Please ensure that your child gets a good night’s rest and comes to school on time during this period. They will test again in the spring so we can gauge academic growth. More information will be sent home with your child as the date approaches.

This month, we will begin having our monthly assemblies for the elementary students. Each month will highlight one classroom. Assemblies will be held on the last Friday of every month. Our first assembly will be Friday, October 19 and will be presented by the  5th graders. Assemblies are from 8:45-9:45 and parents are invited to attend.

Additionally, there will be an assembly on Wednesday, 24 October in celebration of OXI Day. All children (grades 1-5) will participate in this program. We invite our parents to join us. The elementary assembly will begin at 11:00 am. There will be no school on Thursday, October 25 or Friday, October 26 in recognition of the holidays.

One last thing; World Food Day is Tuesday, 16 October. In order to raise the awareness of food waste and world hunger, Pinewood will plan some activities for the students on this day. There are two ways in which you can be involved. First, send us the recipe of one of your family's favorite foods. From this, we will create a Pinewood International Recipe Book. Second, prepare a dish from your native country and bring it to your child’s classroom during lunch. This way, the kids can enjoy foods from all over the world for lunch that day.

Thank you as always for your continued support. We cannot do this alone. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns. And if you’re at the school, please top by my office and say “hello”.
