Grade 2 and the Kandinsky Project
February 18, 2015

In grade 2, we looked at Kandinsky’s art, a Russian pioneer of
abstract modern art from the early twentieth century. Within his
paintings he utilized many shapes. To integrate art into math, we used
his abstract paintings to identify different 2-D shapes we knew. Then
working in groups, grade 2 used Kandinsky for inspiration to create our
own abstract geometric art. This allows students to make connections
between subjects and find creative confidence and voice in their
expression.
When students are engaged hands-on and are creating
their own learning, they are deepening their level of understanding
about a specific topic. In this case, students thought differently both
about classification and characteristics of 2-D shapes, as well as
community-building and collaboration.
