Middle School’s Thermi Park Orienteering Adventure!

The first outdoor Middle School Orienteering session was successfully completed yesterday in which 36 students, 4 teacher chaperones, one parent chaperone, and our guide completed a route through the upper hills of Thermi forest.  We were fortunate enough to be using one of the two professionally produced Orienteering maps in Greece in this exercise! The colors, symbols, shading on the map, and their compasses helped students to determine their location and the direction they needed to travel in order to reach control points, where a flag and card puncher were located. Once the control flag was reached, students punched their control cards to verify having successfully reached the flag.

Some areas of the park were easily traversable – pathways and meadows – while other areas of rough forest terrain required more effort especially in the mid-day heat. Throughout the adventurous day, our students proudly displayed Pinewood school spirit by staying positive and doing their best.

At the end of the trek, students enjoyed refreshments and a time to relax in the Thermi Park cafeteria before heading back to school. We’re all looking forward to the next event, which will take place on Wednesday May 16th at Seih Sou Park. Students are reminded to prepare themselves well for the heat by bringing plenty of water, wearing appropriate clothing, a hat, and sunscreen.
