The ‘Art of Hip Hop’
March 29, 2013
The Annual Middle School Project, which will focus on the exciting topic of ‘Hip Hop’ kicked off this week. Two guest presenters from the local community joined our Middle School students to introduce the project’s theme and give demonstrations of their skills in the area of Break Dancing and Graffiti Art.
Hip Hop, a subculture that originated from an African American community during the 1970s in New York City and later spread its influence to Latin American communities, is now a worldwide and multicultural group of artistic forms. While the term is often used to refer to hip-hop music, our students have learned that, in its broader sense, hip-hop culture is characterized by the four elements of rapping, DJing, breaking and graffiti. Students will continue the project by participating in an in-depth project on either dancing or graffiti art during the month of April.
