The High School Art Club Explores Kara Walker!

Post

Giannos Binopoulos, Alexa Stoychova, Stergios Athanasiou, Sejla Subasic and Valeriia Chudinova were introduced to Kara Walker’s artworks and were inspired to plan and create a joint installation artwork. Kara Walker is best known for exploring the raw intersection of race and gender through her iconic, silhouetted figures. Walker unleashes the traditionally proper Victorian medium of the silhouette directly onto the walls of the gallery, creating a theatrical space in which her unruly cut-paper characters inflict violence on one another.

As part of this project we decided to look at a social-political issue of our time and chose to explore the Syrian refugees issue. We researched and found press images of refugees and first created small collages by turning some of them into silhouettes. We then enlarged those figures and reassembled them altogether in a large scale collage.
